FELT MONOGRAM COIN POUCH (DIY MOTHER’S DAY GIFT IDEA!)

Supplies:

  • Small faux leather coin pouches or makeup bags

  • Felt in assorted colors (this is my favorite Etsy shop for colored felt)

  • Embroidery floss in assorted colors

  • Embroidery needle

  • Fabric scissors

  • Craft glue

  • Mason jar lid

  • Letter stickers (the stickers I used were about 2.5” tall and I bought them from Michaels a few years back)

Start by picking out your color combinations. You will want a felt color and an embroidery floss color that will coordinate well with the coin pouch color. I ended up with this very Wes Anderson inspired color palette that I’m loving :)

Find the sticker of the letter that matches the first name of your gift recipient and stick the letter to your piece of felt. Carefully cut out the outline of the letter with a pair of sharp fabric scissors. Then, peel off the sticker to reveal a felt letter monogram.

Next, glue your felt letter to the center of the front of your leather pouch. Be sure that you are gluing on the backside of the letter so that it is facing the correct direction when you stick it on (and not the mirrored image). This will help hold the letter in place while you are embroidering.

Take your mason jar lid and remove the center middle piece so that you are left with just the metal ring. This is what we are going to use to hold the pouch open while you are working.

Once the glue has dried, open the coin pouch by gently pressing the hinges on the left and right side of the pouch top. Push the metal mason jar lid ring into the opening to hold the hinges open.

Thread your embroidery floss onto your embroidery needle and tie a double knot at the end of the string. I cut a piece that was about my wingspan size.

You will begin embroidering by threading the needle through the inside of the pouch up through the layer of leather and felt at the very top of the letter. So the knot at the end of your floss should not be visible, it should be on the inside of the coin pouch.

You will be using a basic running stitch along the outline of your felt letter. This stitch is super simple, you will just go up through the material then back down through the material, again and again, trying to keep your stitches a consistent size.

The most difficult part of the embroidering is trying to figure out where is the correct place to come up through the leather since it is hard to see where you are from the other side. Just poke your needle up a few times until you are in the right spot to pull the floss through.

Continue around the perimeter of the letter until you reach where you started. Finish the running stitch with a stitch down through the material and tie a double knot in your floss on the backside (inside the pouch) to secure the embroidery. Trim any extra embroidery floss from the inside.

And your monogram pouch is complete! It really is a fairly simple project, but the stitching does get a bit difficult the closer to the bottom you get because the coin pouch opening is very small to fit your hand inside to do the stitching.

I love the handmade look of these embroidered felt monograms. They are the perfect mix of a practical gift with some personalized DIY love! And your mom (or any mother figure in your life) is sure to love a homemade gift.
